Stonesthrow Bush Camping — A Weekend That Reminded Us Why We Do This

We needed a reset. Nothing complicated, just a Friday afternoon pack-up, a couple of nights under trees, and back home Sunday with the kids still smiling and tuckered out.

Stonesthrow Bush Camping in the Scenic Rim delivered exactly that.

It's the kind of place that's hard to describe without sounding like a brochure, so I'll just tell you what actually happened. We arrived, opened the awning, and immediately did nothing productive for about three hours. The property has this slow, sprawling energy with big open paddocks, old trees, and a handful of donkeys wandering around like they own the place (they do). Zula, our dog, was off lead the whole weekend. Watching a dog genuinely lose her mind with happiness is one of the better things in life.

Rich, the owner, was onsite the whole time, the kind of host who's around if you need him and invisible if you don't. His daughter ended up spending a lot the weekend hanging out with our daughter, which is exactly what you want on a family camping trip. The kids entertain each other, the adults get to actually sit in the hammock and read a book.

Saturday we drove over to Sharp Park Riverbend Campground to find the creek. Worth it. Good flow in the river, and a good excuse to get out of camp for a few hours without committing to anything too ambitious.

Sunday morning we packed up early and headed home via Dreamworld on the Gold Coast, which felt slightly surreal after two days of donkeys and creek walks. The kids handled the transition fine. Better than fine, actually.

The Scenic Rim sits about an hour and a half from the Sunshine Coast — close enough for a genuine long weekend, far enough that it actually feels like you've gone somewhere. If you've been stacking up weekends on the coast and want something a little quieter, this is the move.

Thinking about a weekend trip from the Sunshine Coast? The Vamuz II is set up for exactly this — a 4x4 that can handle the tracks, with everything already packed. Check availability →

Sunshine Coast local, campervan builder, and the person who actually answers the phone at Vamuz. I moved my family from LA to Australia in 2021, built our first van by hand in a mate's warehouse, and have been helping people explore the East Coast ever since. Nearly 150 hires and 2,000+ nights adventured across the fleet. I know these roads, the free camps worth stopping at, and the ones to skip.
