Best Waterfalls on the Sunshine Coast — Swimming Holes, Hinterland Hikes & Campervan Day Trips
If you're exploring the Sunshine Coast and haven't made it into the hinterland yet, you're missing half the picture. Within 30–45 minutes of the coast you'll find some of Queensland's best waterfalls, lush rainforest, rope swings, cold rock pools and trails that feel a world away from the beach crowds.
We've done all of these with the family, usually loaded up in the van with a packed lunch, a couple of towels, and no particular agenda. Here's our honest guide to the best waterfalls on the Sunshine Coast, including which ones are worth the drive, which ones are best for kids, and how to turn a waterfall day trip into an overnight adventure.

1. Gardners Falls – Best for Families
Gardners Falls is the one we keep coming back to. It's only a 300m walk from the car park along Obi Obi Creek, the rock pools are shallow enough for little kids, and the rope swings make it feel like a proper adventure. It gets busy on weekends — arrive before 9am if you want it to yourselves.
Where: Maleny, 45 minutes from the Sunshine Coast Walk: 300m return, flat and easy Swimming: Yes — rock pools and a wide waterhole Best for: Families, young kids, a casual half-day
🚐 Campervan tip: Combine with lunch in Maleny township (15 minutes away) then head south to camp at one of the HipCamps near Montville. Perfect one-night loop from the Sunshine Coast..
2. Kondalilla Falls – Best Overall Waterfall
Kondalilla is the Sunshine Coast's best waterfall, full stop. An 80–90m drop into the Obi Obi Valley, a proper swimming hole at the top, and a 4.7km circuit that takes you all the way to the base. It's close to Noosa — about 45 minutes inland — which is why "waterfalls near Noosa" searches almost always end up here.
The walk down is beautiful and shaded but the climb back up will let you know about it. Bring plenty of water.
Where: Kondalilla National Park, near Montville — 45 mins from Noosa Walk: 4.7km circuit or 1.7km return to the top pool Swimming: Yes — rock pool at the top of the falls Best for: Hikers, anyone based near Noosa, a proper half-day out
🚐 Campervan tip: Park at the Kondalilla picnic area and camp nearby at Flaxton or Montville. This is prime Vamuz II territory — the 4x4 handles the hinterland roads easily.
3. Baxter Falls, Flaxton — Best for a Real Adventure
Baxter Falls takes a bit more effort and that's exactly why we love it. The southern approach from Flaxton Mill Road is a moderate 6.8km return with some steep sections, creek crossings, and a suspension bridge that makes for excellent photos. It's part of the Sunshine Coast Hinterland Great Walk.
The payoff is a beautiful waterfall and plunge pool with almost no crowds — most people don't bother making the effort.
Where: Flaxton, near Montville Walk: 6.8km return from Flaxton Mill Road (southern approach) — allow 3 hours Swimming: Yes — plunge pool at the base Best for: Fit families, hikers, anyone who wants to avoid the crowds
🚐 Campervan tip: Reward yourself with lunch at Flaxton Gardens on the way back. It's one of the best views in the hinterland and worth every dollar.
4. Buderim Serenity Falls — Best Quick Escape
Serenity Falls is the one nobody expects. It's tucked inside Buderim Forest Park, less than 5 minutes from Buderim township and about 20 minutes from Mooloolaba. A short easy walk through subtropical rainforest leads to a lovely cascade and swimming hole that genuinely feels remote — despite being surrounded by suburbs.
Perfect when you've got limited time or the kids need a nature fix without a long drive.
Where: Buderim Forest Park, Buderim — 20 mins from Mooloolaba Walk: 1–2km return, easy Swimming: Yes — small pool at the base Best for: Quick escapes, Sunshine Coast locals, anyone short on time
5. Mapleton Falls — Best Viewpoint
You can't swim at Mapleton Falls but the view from the lookout is genuinely jaw-dropping — Pencil Creek drops 120m straight off the escarpment into the Obi Obi Valley below. The lookout is literally 50m from the car park, making it one of the most accessible big waterfalls in Queensland.
Combine it with the drive between Maleny and Mapleton — one of the best scenic routes in the Sunshine Coast hinterland — and you've got a great afternoon.
Where: Mapleton Falls National Park, Mapleton Walk: 50m from car park to lookout Swimming: No Best for: Photography, older travellers, anyone doing the Maleny–Mapleton drive
6. Booloumba Falls, Conondale National Park — Best for Campers
We had to add this one. Booloumba Falls is about an hour from the coast, deep in the Conondale National Park, and requires a 4WD to access the falls car park. It's a 3km return walk to the falls with a big rock pool above them that's brilliant for swimming. There's also a campsite right nearby.
This is one of the best overnight campervan spots in Southeast Queensland — remote enough to feel like a real escape, accessible enough to not need a serious 4WD setup.
Where: Conondale National Park — ~1 hour from the Sunshine Coast Walk: 3km return to the falls Swimming: Yes — big rock pool above the falls Best for: Overnight trips, 4WD campers, anyone wanting the full off-grid experience Note: 4WD required for the falls car park. Vamuz II handles this easily.
🚐 Campervan tip: Book a campsite at Booloumba Creek through QLD Parks before you go. This is exactly what Vamuz II was built for.
Best Time to Visit Sunshine Coast Waterfalls
The waterfalls are at their best after rain — summer (December to February) gives you the most impressive flows but also the most crowds and mosquitoes. Late summer (late March, which is right now) is actually a sweet spot — there's still plenty of water after the wet season and it's cooled down enough to make the hikes comfortable. Most waterfalls slow to a trickle in late winter (July–September) unless there's been recent rain.
How to Turn a Waterfall Day Trip into an Overnight Adventure
The Sunshine Coast hinterland is one of the best overnight campervan destinations in Queensland. Most of the waterfalls above sit within 20–30 minutes of excellent HipCamps, holiday parks, and national park campsites.
A perfect two-day loop from Warana:
Day 1: Gardners Falls → Maleny lunch → Kondalilla Falls → camp near Montville
Day 2: Baxter Falls → Flaxton Gardens lunch → back to the coast
We can set you up with a van and help plan the exact route. Both Vamuz (Ford Transit, sleeps 4) and Vamuz II (GWM Cannon 4x4, rooftop tent) are perfect for hinterland trips — all gear included, pet friendly, pick up from Warana or delivery to the airport.
