Short answer: to take a hire 4x4 camper to K'gari (Fraser Island) you need a K'gari vehicle access permit bought in your own name with the hire vehicle's rego ($61.80 for up to a month), a QPWS camping permit for every night you camp in a QPWS area ($7.75 per person or $31 per family per night), and a barge or ferry ticket (the Inskip Point barge is $150 return for a 4WD). Buy the permits online before you get to Inskip Point. Rangers can't sell them on the island.
Prices last checked 29 October 2026 against parks.qld.gov.au and the barge operator. They change, so check again before you go.
G'day, Chris here. "Can I take it to K'gari?" is one of the most common things people ask our Ask Vamuz chat, and the follow-up is nearly always about permits. Fair enough. There are three separate bits of paperwork, run by different people, and the rules for hire vehicles are a bit different to bringing your own 4WD. Here's how it actually works when you pick up Vamuz from Warana and point it north.

Do you need a permit to drive on K'gari in a hire camper?
Yes. Every vehicle needs a current vehicle access permit before it enters the K'gari Recreation Area. The only exception is vehicles that stay inside the Kingfisher Bay Resort boundary, which isn't much use in a camper.
You don't need a sticker on the windscreen any more. K'gari uses 24-hour number plate cameras, so you just need a copy of the permit on your phone or printed if a ranger asks. The catch: if the plate on your permit is wrong, a fine can be sent to the registered owner. In a hire camper, that's me. So please double-check the rego.
Whose name goes on the permit for a hire vehicle?
Yours. This is the bit that trips people up. Queensland law says that each time a rental vehicle is in a recreation area, the person who hired it must be the person who applies for the permit (Recreation Areas Management Act 2006, s 41). QPWS repeats it plainly: permits aren't transferable, and you must buy one in your own name for the vehicle, including hired vehicles (QPWS, before you visit).
So you can't use an old permit someone else bought for Vamuz, and I can't buy one for you. You'll need:
- Your name and contact details (the person on the Camplify booking).
- Vamuz's rego. I'll give it to you once you've booked.
- Your start date, then pick the 1-month option.
Book it on the Queensland National Parks Booking Service. If you can't book online, call 13 QGOV (13 74 68).
This is what the permit gets you. One of the sand tracks dropping onto the eastern beach up the northern end of K’gari.
Do I also need a camping permit?
Yes, if you're camping in a QPWS camping area or beach camping zone, and you need it before you set up camp. You choose the exact zone or campground and dates when you book, and you can't camp somewhere else unless you change the booking first. Display your booking number at your site (QPWS camping on K'gari).
- Cost: $7.75 per person per night, or $31 per family per night. A family is one or two adults with kids under 18, up to eight people. Under-fives are free (QPWS camping fees).
- Book early: you can book up to 12 months ahead, and QPWS strongly recommends it for school holidays and public holidays. The summer holidays are coming up fast.
- No sales on the island: rangers don't sell permits, and phone reception is patchy. Sort it at home.
- Private camps are different: Dilli Village, Cathedrals on Fraser and the K'gari camping area are privately run and booked directly, not through QPWS.
Travelling with kids aged 14 or under? QPWS recommends the dingo-fenced campgrounds, like Central Station, Dundubara, Eli, Lake Boomanjin, Waddy Point top and Wongai (QPWS FAQ). Our 4-day K'gari loop uses the fenced Eli camping area for that reason.
Beach camping zones from the air. You book the zone and the dates before you cross, so pick your spot at home.
Is the Manta Ray barge a permit? Do I have to book it?
No, it's a ferry ticket. It doesn't replace your vehicle permit. The Manta Ray barge runs from Inskip Point (about 15 km past Rainbow Beach) to Hook Point. It takes about 10 minutes, and normally runs about every 30 minutes from 6am, with the last barge leaving Inskip at 4:45pm and the last one off K'gari at 5pm (Mantaray Barges).
- 4WD return: $150 (one way $115), passengers included.
- 4WD with a trailer up to 6ft x 4ft: $250 return. Over 6ft x 4ft: $280 return ($195 one way). They measure from the tow ball to the back of the load.
- Towing Woodstock? Opus lists the OP4 at 5.60 m long (Opus OP4 specs), well over 6ft (about 1.8 m). So Vamuz towing Woodstock is the 4WD & Over 6ft x 4ft Trailer ticket: $280 return or $195 one way. Mantaray charges a surcharge if you pick the wrong ticket, so don't buy the smaller one.
- Buy online and you get a QR code, valid once within 12 months. You can also pay cash on board. There's no EFTPOS on board.
- You can't reserve a departure time. You just line up. In busy periods, get there early.
Heads up for 2026: QPWS has a park alert for severe erosion on the Inskip barge landing access tracks, running from 25 March 2026 to 30 January 2027, and the conditions report says the barge is on reduced hours. Check the K'gari park alerts a few days before you leave.
Coming from Hervey Bay instead? The vehicle ferry from River Heads to Kingfisher Bay on the western side is run by Island Connections K'gari (formerly SeaLink), and you book it ahead. It prices by length (Island Connections fares). The Cannon is 5,439 mm long (GWM Cannon brochure), which puts Vamuz in the Large 4WD (over 5.4 m) fare, from $137.85 one way or $275.70 return. Add $7 for each person on board. Towing Woodstock adds the Trailer / Caravan fare, from $89.40 one way or $178.80 return for up to 5 m including the drawbar. Trailers over 5 m pay extra for every 10 cm, and Island Connections doesn't publish that rate, so get your exact price on the booking screen.
What about Cooloola (Teewah and Double Island Point)?
If you're doing the beach run from Noosa North Shore up to Rainbow Beach on the way, that's the Cooloola Recreation Area, and it needs its own vehicle access permit. A Cooloola day permit is $15.40 online. If you're doing both in the same month, the combined K'gari and Cooloola permit is $99.25, which is 20% off buying them separately (QPWS). You don't need a vehicle permit for the Inskip Peninsula itself (camping there still needs a camping permit).
Beach driving rules worth knowing before you cross
Not permits exactly, but they'll keep you out of trouble (and out of a very expensive recovery):
- All Queensland road rules apply on the beach and inland tracks, including speed limits, seatbelts, and drink and drug driving. Police do patrol.
- Speed limits (unless signed): 80 km/h on the eastern beach, 30 km/h on inland roads, 40 km/h in beach pedestrian areas, 50 km/h on the Hook Point inland road (QPWS).
- Tides: drive within two hours either side of low tide, and don't drive at night.
- Tyres: in Vamuz we run 16–20 PSI on soft sand and pump back to 40 PSI before sealed roads. Full rundown in the Vamuz hire guide and our 4x4 checklist.
- Dingoes (wongari): feeding or disturbing a dingo carries an on-the-spot fine of $2,763, and leaving food unsecured is $518 (QPWS, be dingo-safe). Food goes in the car or locked boxes, never the tent. Spring is rearing season (QPWS alert: 1 September to 30 November 2026), so be extra careful.
- Insurance: beach driving is allowed in Vamuz, and cover is through Camplify's insurance. Read what Camplify's hirer damage cover includes, and your excess, before you go, and tell me your plans.
The eastern beach is your highway up there, and the usual road rules apply. Stick to the hard sand and time it around low tide.

My permit checklist for a K'gari trip in Vamuz
- Book Vamuz (or Vamuz towing Woodstock).
- Get the rego from me, then buy your K'gari VAP in your own name (or the combined K'gari + Cooloola permit if you're doing the beach run).
- Book camping permits for every night, by exact zone or campground.
- Buy your barge ticket online and save the QR code (or bring cash).
- Check park alerts, the K'gari conditions report and the tide times (MSQ) a few days out.
- Screenshot everything. Reception on the island is patchy.

FAQ
How much is a K'gari permit in 2026? A K'gari vehicle access permit is $61.80 for up to one month, or $311 for up to a year. The combined K'gari and Cooloola permit is $99.25 for up to a month. Camping is extra: $7.75 per person or $31 per family per night.
Can I use the hire company's permit? No. For a rental vehicle, the person who hired it must apply for the permit, in their own name, with the vehicle's rego. Permits aren't transferable.
Can I buy a K'gari permit on the island or at the barge? Buy it before you enter. Rangers on K'gari don't sell permits. The Mantaray Barges office in Rainbow Beach can help with permits, but QPWS says to have them sorted before you reach Inskip Point.
Do I need to display the permit on the windscreen? Not on K'gari or in Cooloola. Number plate cameras check permits, so just carry a digital or printed copy and make sure the rego on it is right.
Can you take a hire car to K'gari? Only a high-clearance 4WD with low range that the hire company allows on the island. QPWS says K'gari's beaches and sand tracks suit high-clearance 4WDs only, and all-wheel drives aren't recommended (QPWS). Vamuz is set up and approved for beach driving.
Can I take a camper trailer to K'gari? QPWS recommends off-road trailers only, behind a 4WD that can tow in deep soft sand. Woodstock is an off-road camper trailer, and Vamuz can tow it. On paper the combo sits within the limits. The Cannon XSR is rated to tow 3,500 kg braked with a 350 kg ball weight. The Opus OP4's ATM is 1,990 kg with a 180 kg ball weight (GWM, Opus). On the Inskip barge it's the 4WD & Over 6ft x 4ft Trailer ticket ($280 return). Talk to me before you plan it.
Ready to cross?
K'gari is the trip people remember. The permits take about 15 minutes online once you know what you need. If you've got questions, use the Ask Vamuz chat on the site or message me on WhatsApp. When you're ready, check dates and book Vamuz or go straight to Vamuz on Camplify.
See you on the sand. Chris
